  • ICS do not appear on my Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition

I searched and found related topic saying KB897616-x86-enu.exe would solve my problems but when i try to install it it says that the fix i'm applying for is an older version and there is no need to apply the said fix. I updated all updates still nothing. My Windows firewall/Internet Connection sharing services are running but nothing appears in the advance tab. I have 2 lan card and i want to make a bridge, internal for local network and external. Did i miss something?

First of all, i am not an SBS specialist. As i meanly work with standard and the enterprise editions of Windows servers 2003.

But it seems kind of logic that is not available.
The SBS server has a small ISA server build in, with this i prosume that ISA will be handling the Routing and Firewall services.

If you enable RRAS on a regular Windows Server 2003, ICS will be disabled as RRAS is handling the routing.

That is just my 2cents, but as stated before, i am not an SBS specialist and therefore my theory could be incorrect.

      Hello

On SBS 2003 ICS feature is not available. Though you do see the service it is disabled by default. The reason for this is RRAS is enabled by default and takes care of your routing on a SBS 2003 server.

In case you have the Premium edition of SBS and are running ISA then ISA will take care of your Routing.

Simply run CEICW and configure your Internal and External NICs through that. It should work just fine.

      Hope it helps

Don't know of anyone in their right mind who would run ICS these days! I know that sounds very opinioniated and I don't mean to offend anyone, but where is the firewall, protection, etc in that setup?
RRAS provides at least a very basic firewall (that is what is used in SBS Standard edition) which is a big step up from ICS. But SBS standard is usually sittting behind another perimeter firewall, which supposedly keeps the bad guys out! The internet is a pretty wild place, you know
