  • Need to move inetpub folder to d:\

I have just installed a new SBS 2003 R2 server and need to move the Default IIS folders off the OS partition (C:\) to D:\. I have found a couple rather confusing scripts to do this but am uncomfortable running them. Has anyone done this and are there some major pitfalls I need to be aware of?

What is the reason behind moving the inetpub?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

Re: Need to move inetpub folder to d:\

I would prefer it to not be on the OS partition as it is not as large as my data partition and I anticipate the inetpub folder growing too large.

Why not put the data wherever you want?

This might help if you're using IIS 6

          Just a quick search on

However i would just change the path of the website and you're done.
          Much easier to do.

Hmm. Not sure about that one as you have monitoring, sharepoint and ISAlogs (with premium) and WSUS (with R2) all connected to IIS. Let me check with my web-savvy colleagues.
Or how about checking out moving other data folders (Exchange, Sharepoint etc.)?

As I suspected. Consensus is it should stay as is. However, there is absolutely nothing preventing you from creating virtual directories wherever you like.
For example, if you had a large library of training videos taking up a lot of space, create a virtual directory for them on D:\media and tell IIS that http://<server>/media can be found there.
              TIA

Re: Need to move inetpub folder to d:\

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question. I am quite the newbie re. IIS and would far rather learn from everyone else before making poor decisions. I will keep inetpub on C: and create the virtual directories as suggested.

                Thank you again

It might well be worth you while looking at the Train Signal Labs, especially the one on Web Servers to quickly gain some experience in this topic. Just click the blue Train Signal link.

                    Hi,
I too go with the decision of teiger. Because if there are any in depth dependencies of directories, the website will not function as expected. Then you may have to rebuild the WebSite in IIS.

Better you do a deep analysis and then proceed with moving inetpub folder.
