  • Windows 2000 SBS Server Msi Installer Problem

My OS is Windows 2000 SBS (Small Business Server) with SP4 and Windows Installer v 2.00.2600.1183.

I am having trouble installing software -
    "MSIexec has missing/corrupt files."

I have downloaded the windows installer 2.0, re-registered
and tried to reinstall per MSKB article 315346. When I
try to reinstall I receive the message "service already
    exists."

I've read and tried everything and understand
that since I already had the latest version I cannot
    reinstall.

What do I do now? If I have to re-bild the domain, how do I do this with SBS as only one DC is allowed...... Please help!!!!!! I have a backup tape but can not get the restore to work.... restoring from tape is not an option.

Warning: what I am about to suggest is dangerous. Do a system state backup before you touch anything and backup the relevant registry keys.

Locate the following keys, backup those, and delete it:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_MSISERVER
Reboot the machine. Now the MSI Installer service will not be registered as a valid service. Try installing the latest version. If you fail, restore the registry to it's original state.
