  • Wierd Printing Behaviour on LPT on SBS

New build SBS 2003 Premium (not R2) (to replace server with failed MoBo)

Installed HP Colour Laser 4500 on LPT1 -- test pages printed OK
2 days later, all printing to LJ4500 went "wierd"

Jobs appeared to spool to printer, disappeared off top of queue and reappeared on bottom. No activity on printer. Server / printer reboot gave same behaviour

Connecting printer direct to another PC gave same behaviour

Connecting a different printer to LPT on server would give an error each time a job was sent. Event log is: "Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 170. The requested resource is in use."

Any bright ideas -- its been suggested the LPT port is damaged physically

Are you using the HP Driver or the MS Built in? Is it the latest? Can you get the printer to work on a stand-alone XP or Vista? Have you tried HP support in your area - they are usually OK (still in Queensferry?)
    TIA

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

      Hi Steven,
MS built in driver -- too many bad experiences with HP drivers

      Same behaviour on XP box

Not had a chance to try HP support, but since printer is several years old, dont know if its worth it!

The strange thing is that other LPT printers exhibit odd behaviour -- dont know if that was the case previously but I assume not
