  • VPN Stopped Working

VPN used to work fine on our SBS 2003 R2 server. It's pretty strange because nothing has changed yet now it doesn't work. I can telnet in fine remotely on port 1723, that works without error. The logs on the router show traffic is going through on those ports fine:

    Tue, 2007-04-10 06:55:33 - TCP Packet - Source: x.x.x.x,1320 Destination: x.x.x.x,443 - [HTTPS rule match]
    Tue, 2007-04-10 06:56:51 - TCP Packet - Source: x.x.x.x,1321 Destination: x.x.x.x,1723 - [VPN-PPTP rule match]
I had an status email on Sunday:

    RemoteAccess service is Stop Pending.

This service enables virtual private network (VPN) and network address translation (NAT) routing services for the Small Business Server computer and other computers connected to the network. If this service is stopped, these services will be unavailable.
But when I just checked the remote access service is running fine. The error is the lovely 721 error which is related to so many things.

Any clues on where to start looking?

        also possible.
However, when RRAS crashes, most of the time restarting the ISA services is enough on regular servers

Whaddya mean "regular servers" ? This is SBS! This is special

Since there are so many inter-dependent services on SBS, and since we are not usually talking about a large organisation, reboot is often a better sanity check. You very often find that services get "stuck" on stopping or restarting. Or even appear to have stopped/started when if fact they haven't.

Recent cases have been people installing updates from remote and then hitting the "Restart Now" button. The end result is often only the temporary termination of the Terminal service. Working from remote, you have no way of knowing if the server physically reset or not - unless you carefull inspect the Event Logs (as I always do!)
          TIA

Regular servers? Ehmm install windows 2003.. Install ISA 2004?
i know it's SBS, but are the ISA Servers so integrated into SBS?

              Not so integrated but:
Regular Windows 2003 Server + ISA 2004 how is it configured? Choose a network scenario and then add your rules.

SBS 2003 SP1 with ISA 2004 how is it configured? UTFW then add in extra rules you may want.
              TIA
