  • svchost.exe 100% usage on client pc's

Server: sbs server 2003 R2 running WSUS
    Client PC: Windows XP professional

This doesn't seem to be happening on all my client PC's hooked up to the sbs 2003 server, but this one in particular will get completely bogged down roughly once per hour. It's svchost.exe and I looked and it's the windows update process that's the culprit. So, I found this whole big issue on it: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/arch...-too-much.aspx.

Article 927891 from Microsoft seemed to be the answer to solve the problem, but it didn't. Has anyone else ran into this particular problem? Any thoughts, suggestions, good psychiatrists I can see? Thanks!

Fellow MVP Susan Bradley is on top of this issue and handling it pretty well. See:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/arch...oes-exist.aspx and let her know about your problem via her blog (leave a comment)

I have seen all those pages and posted a link to one of her blogs about it in the original post and it sure did seem like that was the kb to fix my problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. I've seen people say that it didn't work for them, but I haven't seen alternate solutions. Just wondering if anyone else encountered this I guess.

Check with Susan's blog if that is the latest fix/hotfix. There may be more in the pipeline!

          Hi

Im having a issue with my cpu usage being very hi. The svchost.exe is taking up all the cpu usage. After doing some searching on the web I found a lot of salutions on this issue. The one was that I needed to install a fix with the latest version of WSUS. I tried that and it helped a bit. On some of the other computers in our office it did not help at all. I also got a tip that I need to disable microsoft update on the website. This also did not fix the issue. I also cannot disable automatic updates because group policy blocks me from turning it off. We are using a WSUS server to download updates. I am wandering if I need to install the latest version of WSUS onto the WSUS server. Is there anyone that can help me on this issue?

          Thanks

Percy, are you running SBS server and getting the WSUS CPU utilization problem?
            1 1 was a racehorse.
            2 2 was 1 2.

She references MS Hotfix 927891 which can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/ .

Unfortunately it's not working for us. We have a number of fresh installed Windows XP PCs and even with the hotfix Microsoft Update is hanging them all with the svchost.exe pegged at 99%. What a pain.

Also go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and run the windows checker. Sometimes the automatic update for genuine checking gets stuck in the background and causes similar symptoms.

Yea, we considered that as it did seem to be linked to the Office validation nonsense. We're up to spec with licensing but we thought maybe MS had something screwed up on their end. Wouldn't be the first time. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective) both Windows and Office validation check out fine so that's not the problem.

Ulltimately we had to go back to doing Windows Updates and Office Updates separately. Not my first choice but we had to get these machines into the field. Monday we're gonna set up a computer or two in the lab and see if we can't get some resolution on this. Sure feels like a problem on the MS end though.

AFAIK this is still an issue with MS without a full resolution. I am hoping there will be one by "Patch Tuesday" in a couple of weeks.
                    TIA

I really hope so. This problem is driving my users, and consequently me nuts! I did install WSUS3 which worked on some, but not all PCs apparently.

fyi it's not a licensing thing, but windows update occasionally downloads an update that solely runs the genuine checker and it gets stuck in the background ramping up to 100% utilization.
