  • Windows updates and WSUS

I have a friend with a SBS server setup with WSUS.

While he was on holiday his cover ran windows updates from the web browser. He did not seem to mind this. Although I would not feel comfortable with updating with two separate methods.

Does anyone know any issues with this or does it all work in harmony?

    thanks

Use the console - it will tell you what is OK and what is not!

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.

      Thanks teiger.

when you say console,do you mean the web gui for WSUS ?

What I want to get to the bottom of is is it OK to update from WSUS one month and use updates.microsfot.com the next.

      Thanks

Hard to get from microsfot!! But the console will tell you what is updated on the computers - it will synchronise at the next time stated on the console (usually 10pm)

        Thanks

          Re: Windows updates and WSUS

thanks teiger, i think the post is getting a little cloudy now; so I'll try and clear up.

I canít find Server Management\Update services

The only way I know to mange WSUS is through the browser at http://servername:8530/WSUSAdmin/

Anyway back to my original question.

On a server are there any problems if you normally update using WSUS but for what ever reason you run and apply updates from updates.microsoft.com once in a while ?

Are you running SBS R2? I assumed you were if you were talking about WSUS - my mistake. In any case, running "synchronise" should make the WSUS website agree with what ever is installed on the server.
            TIA
