  • SBS 2003 SP1 Install Troubles

Hey guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the deal.

The following is the article I've been using as a guideline to attempt to install SP1 and Exchange SP2 on a SBS 2003 Standad server:

    http://www.smallbizserver.net/tabid/...w/Default.aspx

First, was getting a bunch of Event Log errors and "Service failed to load" errors on boot. Got those all ironed out. Then, attempted to install SP1, but got a generic error at very end (unfortunately, forgot to document). So, un-installed from add/remove programs (it let me do this without any errors). Decided that since Sharepoint SP2 had already been installed (which is out of order from the required install order), I would uninstall and re-install Sharepoint. This created a whole new set of issues. Found the following article to assist in this process:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829114

After completing the tasks in this article and finally getting the Sharepoint issues fixed, attempted again to install SP1. Began getting the following error:

    -----begin snip-----
    Servie Pack 1 Setup Error

Service Pack 1 installation did not complete.

Windows Server 2003 has been partially updated and may not work properly.
    -----end snip-----

Then, after rebooting following this error, I get the following message during boot:

    -----begin snip-----
    Service Control Manager

Windows could not be started as configured. A previous working configuration was used instead.
    -----end snip-----

Then attempted to un-install SP1, which was now showing up in add/remove programs even though it hadn't actually been installed. Got this error from the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Removal Wizard when attempting to remove:

    -----begin snip-----
    Service Pack 1

The system cannot find the file specified.
    -----end snip-----

I'm lost and frustrated. Been up and down the web looking for and trying different solutions. Any thought are greatly appreciated.

    Hi Josh.

Can you restore from backup and then start the update process again?
    Have you read this? http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._21612134.html

That is THE definitive article on installing SP1 and several of my fellow SBS-MVPs contributed heavily to it. One of them, Kevin Weillbacher, even lives in your state, FL!
Are you sure you followed the document to the letter? Do you have an OEM? Did you upgrade the BIOS prior to starting? Do you have a DELL with Manage Asssist on it?
AS you have already been advised, it is best to go back to where you started and have another go IMHO or, if your AD is still good, use a swing migration (http://www.sbsmigration.com) to a temp DC and then swing back to the same hardware and start over.
      TIA

Iím honoured to have been selected for the SMB 150 list for 2013. This is the third time in succession (no logo available for 2011) that I have been honoured with this award.
