  • DNS Problem

    Hi Everybody
I have very small setup of computer
one Windows 2000 Server with Active Directory and DNS
11 windows XP-Pro Client, Now I install Window 2003SBS as a member server and this server is shutting down every 2 Hours with the error message 1014
    ___
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: SBCore
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1014
    Date: 10/25/2006
    Time: 10:12:53 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: MSW2K3
    Description:
This computer must be configured as a domain controller. It will be shut down in 60 minutes. To prevent this computer from shutting down, run Setup on the disk that you used to install the operating system to configure the computer as a domain controller.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    ___
So I decided to promote this machine (MSW2K3) as domain controller with dcpromo. But I could not promote because it found some problem with the DNS on the MS Win 2000 server.
    I tried nslookup 192.168.2.2 127.0.0.1
    I got *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.2.2: Non-existent domain
I tried deleting the forward and reverse lookup zone and reconfigure. but my nslookup does not work.
    I followed the procedure at
    http://www.petri.com/install_and_con...dns_server.htm
and still my DNS does not resolve its own domain, I did not Enable DNS Forwarding since this is only a file server.
Any Idea how can i setup the DNS so that I can promote W2K3SBS machine as domain controller.
    Your help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

      Re: DNS Problem

What you're trying to do may not be possible but I'm sure Steven will direct you down the right path.
Have a read of this in the meantime http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...atingSBS2k.doc

Question about your DNS: do you have a reverse lookup zone configured?

EDIT - Mods, probably want to move this to the SBS forum, right?

This is being moved to the SBS Forum. I (and probably Steven) would be extremely interested in how you installed SBS2003 as a member server.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,

          Re: DNS Problem

By Design - SBS gives you a time frame to complete the installation before the SBCore service starts to close you down.
The correct method to introduce an SBS into an existing domain is:
          http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453.
If yuou want to go one step further and have your SBS called the same name as your original server (Don't need to change shares. printers etc on the desktop) then you would need Swing Migration on www.sbsmigration.com.
          TIA
