  • Join client to sbs 2003 from branch office

I'm in the process of moving a client from peer-to-peer to SBS 2003. The client has two offices that are connected using Draytek 2600 ADSL routers at each office. The SBS 2003 is at the main office whilst I have set up an additional DC/GC in the Branch office.

The two servers have been on test for over week and evrything (DNS, AD, FRS etc..) is synchrnising without any issues.

Whilst in the main office I have no issue in adding client computers to SBS 2003 domain, I am getting an error at the Branch office.

I have made the appropriate changes to security on the Default Website/Connect Computer.
The Connect Computer wizard runs to its final stage but then fails with a DHCP error. The NIC is DHCP enabled and is getting its settings from the DHCP running on the local DC. The DNS on the NIC is pointing to the local DC DNS that has forwarders pointing to the ISP.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Someone will stomp on me if I am wrong but doesn't SBS only allow one GC?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

      hi,

Try this by establishing a VPN Connection from Remote site and then http://servername/ConnectComputer.

      Hope it helps.

biggles77 - SBS 2003 is not restricted to a single GC.

habibalby - I am using http://servername/ConnectComputer. and as stated in my post, the two sites are connected via VPN using the two Draytek ADSL routers.

        Any other ideas?

          Morning bigish,

Your remote office is getting the DHCP IPs via DHCP Server in the Corporate site? and the Wizard fails with a DHCP error

How is your network infrastructure is setup? what is the role of your ISA Server is it only as a Proxy or Edge Firewall in your network?

If it's Edge Firewall, then what are the Access Rules available between the Remote Site and the Corporate Site? Does ISA provides Internet Connection to the Remote Site as well [VPN Gateway]?

I think is better to draw a diagram with all your configuration and post it here atleast we can come up with a suggestion.

          BR,

Re: Join client to sbs 2003 from branch office

I think the issue is that the ConnectComputer script configures (or at least tries) the local NIC with the Scope Options as per DHCP on SBS 2003 server. This would not be correct for the Branch office (incorrect gateway) and hence the connection is lost.

I have created the Clients via Network ID option and then assigned the appropriate software to each of them. This has worked ok.

However, I am sure there should be a way to use the Connect Computer wizard??

/Connectcomputer only works from "inside" the LAN ie on the same IP segment as the main office. For a few computers, it is proabably not worth reconfiguring your Network. Configure one in the main office and save/print/note the functions that connect computer does when you add a computer to the network.
If >10 computers, then consider re-configuring.

                FYI what the wizard does:-

                Create computer account(s):
                - TESTCONNECT

                Assign application(s) to client computers:
                - Client Operating System Service Packs
                - Internet Explorer 6.0
                - Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (Service Pack 1)
                - Shared Fax Client
                - MS Office 2003
                - MS Office 2003 MUI
                - Acrobat Reader 7.0

                Advanced Client Computer Settings:
                - Configure Internet Explorer Settings
                - Configure Outlook Profile Settings
                - Configure Desktop Settings
                - Configure Fax Printer
                - Configure Printers
                - Configure Fax Configuration Information
                - Configure Remote Desktop

                Apply settings:
                - Do not allow users to modify assigned applications
                - Do not automatically log off after Client Setup
                - Install Connection Manager
                - Configure ActiveSync

To finish setting up the client computer(s), including
network configuration and application deployment and
configuration, go to the client computer(s), start Internet
Explorer, and type http://<SERVER>/ConnectComputer in the
                Address bar.
                TIA
