  • Mmigrating from SBS 2000 to Windows 2003R2

I have a single SBS 2000 server, no exchange. I want to migrate the domain to a Windows 2003 R2 server. This is how I plan to do it:

    1. Extend schema of SBS 2000 server to support windows 2003R2.
    2. Add R2 server to domain, run dc promo, make it a DC.
    3. Try and move the FSMO roles to the R2 server, but I doubt I'll be able to.
    4. Shut down the SBS 2000 server, seize the FSMO roles on the R2 server.

    Possible? Thoughts?

There is no exchange on the R2 server, although I plan on installing Exchange 2003 shortly after accomplishing this task.

Its not a big AD, roughly 30 users.

If only 30 users, why not upgrade to SBS 2003 Premium? Here you have everything included and you will not have the extra expense in purchasing Exchange. SBS is a lot cheaper than WIndows 2003 Server AND SBS 2003 R2 is now available.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

      Seconding Biggles comments here .
For anyone who wants to get to SBS2003 R2 from any platform has to get to SBS2003 SP1 first and the best way to do that is (all together now) Swing Migration -!
