  • How do I change password policy on Win XP Professional?

    Hi,
I have a laptop running Win XP Pro that was previously set to a stronger security setting than what I need now. When I look at the Password Policy setting, it is set to 8 char min, with complex password requirement on, 90 days expiry, etc. That view however does not let me change any of these settings. How do I reset these policies on passwords? I tried adding a snap-in but could not find a snap-in for Local Security Policy, which is what the Help suggested. Any guidance on this would be highly appreciated.

    thanks!

Re: How do I change password policy on Win XP Professional?

Click Start then select Run then type in "mmc" (without quotes) and press enter.
Click on "Console" and select "Add/Remove Snap-in".
Click "Add". Scroll down and select "Group Policy" and click "Add" (select Local Computer) then click "Close". Click "OK".
    Expand "Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Account Policies\ Password policy"

    The settings are in there.

ps - this will only work for non-domain accounts. Domain account password policy settings are set at the domain level and cannot be changed on a per computer basis.

    Hope this helps.
