  • How to activate RAS service in ISA 2004?

I have re-installed our Microsoft ISA Server 2004 SP3, I wonder why the RAS service inside the application is not visible. Do I need to configure something or need to run a certain command? Hope you can help.

For what do you need it? VPN? You should configure that from the ISA console.

If you have ISA you shouldn't need to make any changes in RRAS. ISA will configure RRAS itself and will overwrite most changes you attempt to make in the RRAS console. If RRAS is not installed or configured after re-installing ISA Server then it looks like something has gone wrong with the install.

After installation I did not configure my RRAS yet, so I checked my ISA console -> Monitoring -> Services and i cannot find the RAS service. So I configured my RRAS but after configuration still the services did not appear. If I dont need to configure RRAS and it will configure itself, how long should i wait until the service appears? What else should I consider prior to this?

By the way we use this for VPN and Proxy.

        Thank You

Definitely looks like the install has gone bad then. As I said RRAS should be automatically configured by ISA, so if it wasn't enabled and your changes are not being overwritten automatically by ISA something is drastically wrong. Personally I'd uninstall ISA, remove the RRAS role from the server and then start again.

You don't specify what the Server OS is, I assume it is some flavour of Server 2003 and not SBS 2003 Premium? If it is SBS then you need to configure everything using the SBS Wizards rather than doing it manually, otherwise things will go horribly wrong.

VPN connections are configured from the ISA console and not from the RRAS console. Also RRAS will NOT be seen in the ISA console. There is no need for that.
The services you will see is the Job Sheduler, the Firewall Engine, MSDE database and when in EE, you will see the NLB

Never ever do this from the RRAS console but always and only from the ISA console.

I've checked an ISA 2004 Standard and an ISA 2006 Standard server, and in both cases on the services tab of the monitoring pane you do see the remote access service listed.
