  • AntiVirus Suggestion

Hi, I just started at my current company and the IT they had contract put Norton Antivirus on the Exchange 2003 server running on Windows 2003. There are about 15 users. When I came in he told me that the software was an opened one he had and that I need to purchase a legit one for the company. He suggested that instead using Norton to use McAfee. I wanted to get you guys opinion as to which one you guys recommend.

    Thank you in advance.

Personally I don't like Symantec dough I like McAfee more.
Trend is in my experience rather slow with their updates but usually quite stable.
But I think it's more a personal taste.

We use Sophos AV and Pure Message Email security, pretty happy with it. Never liked Symantec personally, far too many of their products are bloated.

              Re: AntiVirus Suggestion

I have to deal with AVG 7.5 Network Edition and I can say that for my tastes it's disgusting. Hard to manage and the UI is confusing / clunky. Version 8 has not gained my trust. Needless to say, when our contract is up in two months I'll be switching to something else. Have a look at Kaspersky. I like what I've seen of them and will probably be using them as our next AV solution.

Oh, and to echo some previous sentiments, Symantec is bloated and buggy. I'm not impressed with their business AV solutions.

The most important stat to look at is the effectiveness, as rated independantly eg by Virus Bulletin. If it's for an Exchange server, make sure it's Exchange-aware.

Indeed, search for the product what suits your best although I would skip Symantec
With McAfee don't forget to review ePO (epolicy Orchestrator) as well
Also you might review Microsoft Forefront.

I would also avoid NOD32 if you run Server 2008. We came across an issue today where NOD32 prevents Network Location Awareness from working correctly and so the servers always default to the public profile and lock everybody out. I've a few other gripes about NOD32 as well, but that's todays one.

Deployed McAfee VSE8.5i (8.7i) 9 months ago with EPO4.0. My thoughts, McAfee is stable, did not have major problems, highly manageable via EPO, 2008 compatible, did not encounter problems on exchange.

For us it was the right decision.
