  • Blocking of Sending and Receiving attachments in Web based email servers

    Hi All,
I have a network of 25 Systems having Windows XP Installed, all are clients to windows 2003 server based Domain. with Following Settings :-

    All Windows XP Pro
    One ADSL Internet Connection
    Gateway for all = 192.168.1.1
    DNS for all = 192.168.1.2
All Machines are having Unrestricted Internet connection.
I don't have any Proxy or ISA configuration.

I have Zone alarm Basic Firewall in individual system
    My Requirements:-
Allow Free mail servers (Ex. Yahoo / Rediff/ Gmail etc.)
    - Users should Access their mails using http using a browser
    - Users should NOT be able to SEND Attachments
    - Users should NOT be able to RECEIVE Attachments
    - No other restrictions to be implemented

I can consider any software firewall, Hardware Firewall, Or a combination of both if solves my purpose.
    Thanks for valuable suggestion,

    regards,
    kriish

It seems like it can be done.

Here's a post that discusses this topic using ISA 2004: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Micr..._22996019.html

You may also look into using a proxy server, like Squid. Here's a thread concerning doing this with SafeSquid: http://www.safesquid.com/html/viewtopic.php?p=7662

Let us know how it turns out, specifically if you look more into Squid. I'm intrigued by its possibilities and may set up a squid server in the near future.

Re: Blocking of Sending and Receiving attachments in Web based email servers

        It should be complicated.
You want to block ANY attachments sending\receiving, or some SPECIFIC type of files?
Some info may be captured here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Soft..._21930570.html
        In global:
        - You will need proxy-server to filter all incoming\outgoing traffic.
        - Then configure traffic analysis to prevent attachments for specific sites, and also sorts of attachments.
        Some possible problems:
        - Some files blocked may cause problems with network surfing, for example jpeg and gif files etc.
        - On heavy network usage, be prepared to some delays, otherwise good hardware should be used for SQUID (proxy server) machine.
