  • Which Border Firewall do you use?

I am comparing firewalls. We currently use smoothwall but I am not that impressed with it. I wonder if an appliance solution would be better and would like to get some feedback from my fellow techies...

What firewall do you use and why?

If I implement another smoothwall then I have to buy a new machine for it by which time I may as well just buy an appliance. I wouldn't mind seeing the back of smoothwall, but if I am to consider another solution it must interoperate with smoothwall in order keep vpns between sites etc...

    All feedback welcome.

its kind of hard to answer this without knowing how many users are inside, but for what it is worth the RVS4000 by linksys is nice (price too) and supports VPN's (site to site as well)

      Hey there
I have been using check point security. so far it hasn't given any problem. Why we selected check point
      1- Easy to configure
2- dont take much system resources

There are quite a lot of good firewalls out there. However, without telling the requirements it's hard to recommend one.

I need it to protect around 100 machines here in this office and be able to do site to site vpns to at least 3 other sites currently using Smoothwalls. I also need vpns for remote workers.

Enterprise features like decent logging, Intrusion Detection and Prevention, Traffic Monitoring etc are also on the agenda.

let's see, how much have I got in my wallet.... £20?

nah, just kidding. I don't know. If Smoothwall costs £200 and a new piece of hardware costs ~£800 then I'd say £500-£800 would be suitable.

800 pounds? hmmm i think it's not enough for CheckPoint.

Check Point can run on SecurePlatform which is delivered with Check Point. I think that the license only will cost a couple of thousands of USD.
Microsoft ISA 2004 will cost you a license for Windows and a license for ISA. Without the hardware, you are already above the 800 pounds.
The Cisco Secure PIX 515E Firewall is also above the 800 pounds I think. However the 501 is much cheaper. The disadvantage is the management and logging.
Maybe is the Juniper Networks Firewall an option, however i dont have any experience with it.
Smoothwall Is an OK firewall, but im not so sure about the open source. Also I am not impressed of that firewall.

I'm not impressed with it either which is why I am asking what else is out there...

ISA server is supposed to be pretty good. I didn't realise there wasn't that much in my price bracket. I doubt my boss would want to go beyond that....

If only I understood the internals of the vpns I would do a gentoo router with iptables and the vpns as well...

Re: Which Border Firewall do you use?

Security costs money, however loosing business cause of a hacking attack costs even more It can costs days of work to fix everything the company lost.
After that, he problably still want to invest into it, so i should recommend to make the consequenses quite clear.
Personally i would recommend Check Point or ISA Server.
