  • Error 5 using LOGON.SCR to reset PW - FAT32 drive

    I tried this method to reset my lost XP password on a FAT32 drive:

    If you turn your PC on it will eventually get to logon, if you do nothing a screen saver will launch, this screensaver is called LOGON.SCR. If you replace LOGON.SCR with the windows command line program (cmd.exe) it will launch a command line window instead, and not just any command line window, you are then typing commands with the SYSTEM rights, (This is higher than Administrator)
    If you have formatted the machine as FAT32 you are in luck simply boot with a floppy disk, and change:

    for windows XP

    copy c:\windows\system32\logon.scr c:\windows\system32\logon.bak {Enter}
    del c:\windows\system32\logon.scr (Enter}
    copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\cmd.bak {Enter}
    ren c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe logon.scr {Enter}

    Then reboot when the system reboots go and have a coffee, when you see the command window type: net user administrator password {Enter}

    The problem was I then got ôSystem error 5 has occurred" "Access is denied"

    Any ideas?

    That method is just one of many methods to crack-open the administrator's password. Did you try one of the other methods?
