  • I've reset password on server 2003, but still can't login

Hi this is my first post, so I'll jump right in

I took over as a network specialist/server admin for a regional office of education this week. The old network specialist left on unpleasant terms last November. Since he has been gone nobody has been able to access two servers at an alternative school.

For the last three mornings I have been trying different tools with no success. I have used:

EBCD (trial version, finds pass but won't write a new one to disc)
Spotmau Password Kit, says it successfully blanked pass, but still can't login
Offline NT password reset, says it successfully blanked (when run a second time says the password is already blank), but can't login
    Ultimate boot CD (same result)

I got ERD commander 2005 from my MCDN account. It let me change the password to the one that the other servers use, but I still can't login.

All of these tools show two accounts Administrator and User

If I use OPHcrack it shows 4 accounts, but can't find the passwords.

I have read that the default is for a complex password, so maybe the password used for the other servers won't work. I will go back this afternoon and try a more complex password.

If anyone can see where I have gone wrong or has any solutions or wild ideas, I would very much appreciate any suggestions. As a last resort I will re-install, but things things have been like this for three months. I suppose that sooner rather than later something will happen that I need access.

    Thanks for any help
    Scott

Are these servers members of a domain?

Yes, there are two different networks in the building which part of a larger domain. Each of the machines is set up as a domain controller. I went back today and when I booted up with ERD commander I got a error message "the discovery service is running, password change was not allowed". I used erd commander to look at the running services, but could not fine discovery services. I thought maybe I could temporarily disable it long enough to change the password. I will research over the weekend. any thoughts are appreciated. Maybe I should skip the part where ERD looks for network components? Scott

        OK. A couple of things:

        1. Domain Controllers don't have local user accounts. Are you trying to logon to the domain as the domain administrator from these two machines or are you trying to logon to the local machines as the local administrator? If it's the latter then that's the problem as domain controllers don't have local user accounts.

        2. If it's the former, have you tried logging on to the domain from a different workstation\server as the domain administrator?

Thanks for clarifying the different account types. my ultimate goal is to be able to manage the two servers in question. I have been trying to login directly at the machines, I will try it from another workstation/server. As you can tell I really don't understand all that is going on, but thanks for the pointers. I will report back Monday on further developments. Scott

Success! Thanks joeqwerty for steering me the right way, Daniel for the guide to resetting server 2003 domain controller passwords, and Robert Strom for the great script.

I still need to reset the other server and clean up some stuff, but thanks to you guys I have access.
