  • USB Drive not displayed.

Compaq Deskpro EN Pentium III 733, 265MB RAM Windows XP Pro SP2 with Updates and hotfixes.

Connect USB drive to USB port on Compaq. Makes connection sound and the appropriate icon appears in the System Tray however NO drive letter is assigned. Device Manager also shows connection pulling 200mA.

Logged on as Administrator. Disk Management shows the drive without a drive letter and a drive letter can be assigned but nothing shows up in Windows Explorer. Right click on the USB device in Disk Management and click Explore, nothing. Left click the OPEN option and you can browse the drive (but there is still no drive letter appearing in Explorer even though one has been manually assigned). This is NOT a drive mapping problem and no GPO has been applied either. USB worked fine when Windows 98 was installed (with USB drivers of course).

Chipset drivers were installed (or attempted) but was stopped at 45% due to XP supporting the chipset. Damaged USB devices have also been eliminated from this problem.

Did you tried to remove the USB drivers and reboot so it will be reinstall?
Also, did you checked the USB drive in another computer?

      Yes, no difference are reinstalled.

Yes, the device works fine in other hardware platforms. Even tried several different USB drives in the problem platform.

No conflicts in Device Manager. The device is detected correctly and shows up as a Mass Storage device under the USB devices. It detects what USB port it is using and how much power is being used by the drive/key.

Its look like drivers issue "Chipset drivers were installed (or attempted) but was stopped " you may need to remove all the motherboard drivers (includes the hide one) and reboot.

              Re: USB Drive not displayed.

Wiped the drive and installed XP (the original) and then added SPs and Upgrades one by one. Quicktime, Shockwave etc were also added. So far no apps have been installed but the USB is running correctly. My guess is there was a clash with some app that caused the problem. Only recent Microsoft software is being installed on this platform and not the Windows 3.1 software they want.

                Re: USB Drive not displayed.

I am having the same problem at the moment. When I plug in a USB memory stick WinXP assiogns it a drive letter, however when I plug in an external hard drive (40Gb) it does not assign a drive letter, most annoying.

                  Re: USB Drive not displayed.

Firstly, you should have started a new thread.

Is the 40GB HDD being seen in Disk Management?
Has the 40GB HDD been formated etc in Disk Management?
Does the 40GB HDD have it's own power supply or does it rely on being powered by the USB port??
