  • Notebook as server(Centrino vs Pentium 4)

    Hi experts,
we are planning to procure a notebook which will be used as a demo server(Windows 2003),i had a small query regarding Centrino/Pentium 4,i obviously need performance as it will be acting as a server therefore keeping this in mind which processor will provide optimized performance centrino or pentium4 ?

How many users / clients are you planning on?

I have successfully run server and clients in Virtual PC on a P4 1.8 notebook (256 Mb Virtual RAM each) but performance is sluggish. If it is a dedicated machine, I would have thought RAM and HDD speed are as important as the processor type.

The configuration for the task you've mentioned would run Windows 2003 nicely. Like previously mentioned, the processor isn't as big an issue as the amount of ram and hdd speed (hdd especially - avoid 4200 RPM drives).

IMO the 1.6Ghz CPU w/ no less than 1GB ram and a 7200 RPM for quick disk access would make this a more than suitable option.

The most important thing beside at least 1 GB RAM of RAM is SATA Hard Disk (5400/7200 RPM). Computers like Lenovo X60 have this nice disks
