  • Retrieve lost data from formatted drive

One of my clients has formatted their drive and backed up the wrong folder. As a result, they have lost important data.

What tools are out there that may retrieve this data? It's on a Windows 7 box.

    Thanks,

    Philip

Re: Retrieve lost data from formatted drive

FIRST - disconnect the drive or power down the computer (do not do a normal shutdown as files may be overwritten)

SECOND - for "formatted drive recovery" and look at the tools available - I have had good results with OnTrack, but there are many others

THIRD - install the tool you choose on a different PC and connect the drive to it, then check what files can be recovered. Alternatively contact a specialist data recovery service

MOST IMPORTANTLY - set your client expectations - they f**ked up, not you, and any data you manage to recover is a bonus!

if it's jujst a format, then GetDataBack will be your best bet.
In it's trial state, it will let you see what dagta can be recovered, then you pay the $50us or whatever it is.

As ossian said though, don't re-partition the drive or do anything to the source drive.
get a second drive, ghost the original
and then a third drive to recover content onto

If you do get a successful recovery make a big deal about how difficult it was. I had a mate (yes, I do have ONE ) who recovered AUD$800,000 worth of data and didn't even get a thank you.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2
