  • LINUX - Is VMware based on Linux?

I have always assumed that VMware was based on linux - as it looks very similar (when you are at the console).

When I google it, I see the top results are contradicting each other:

This article seems to insinuate that it is based on the Linux kernel:

Where as this article implicitly argues that it is not (although it does seem to be a deliberately pedantic article):

Just wondering if anyone has a definitive answer? Or is it a grey area?

I thought VMware were plastic containers used to store leftover food in.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

Reading the article it states that it's not based on it:
As of version 4.1, VMWare has dropped development of ESX and now focuses exclusively on ESXi, which is devoid of a Linux kernel.
VMware Inc states that vmkernel does not derive from Linux, but acknowledges that it has adapted certain device-drivers from Linux device drivers.

              Yep my bad. Sorry!!!!

It used to be based on a Linux kernel which was used to run the service console.

I would still say though that the ESXi hypervisor still has its roots in Linux, be it minimal.
