  • IT Cost Effective Projects

    Hi All,

We are medium sized company and our management is asking if we could provide a coat effective IT project to work on. Could you share any project that best fits our company?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    uh.
    Wow.
I don't know if this question is for real.

for starters - what is your budget?
What sort of things do you think need to be done within the infrastructure? do you need a desktop refresh, or server refresh?
Is there some new, funky technology you'd like ?
Maybe you want to implement a VoIP solution and demonstrate how it would save the company money over the long term in call costs?
maybe you want to enable tele-working with Lync, video conferencing, the voip solution above, DirectAccess.

Maybe you want to virtualise all your servers? Maybe you want to move everything to the cloud?

It's just.. wow. What a question.

Appreciate your feedback on this, we are a BPO company so we dont need for a VoIP coz its already in place. Lync and virtualization are good but may incur cost. I am looking for a specific project that would enhance or best thing to work on a System Administrator's perspective. Thanks

Why don't you start by telling us what you DO have in place -- there is so much you could do....

If you don't yet have an intranet, consider implementing SharePoint, as there are (for the Foundation Edition) no software costs involved (but time could add a lot to the hidden costs)

any real project that adds value will incur a cost one way or the other.

          - implement a nagios monitoring system so you know what's happening with your network.
          - implement a bunch of scripts to make administrative tasks easier and automate things.
          - consolidate servers to remove old ones, thus reduce overall power consumption and ongoing maintenance costs

I would suggest you do a bit more research before presenting anything to management, starting with the business case and a cost/benefit analysis

Let us know how you get on, please!

                Insomnia so I was reading.
You want a cost effective IT project but you "query" in the second quote above that is may incur cost. What exactly are you after? A cost effective project or a free project, which would then make it cost effective.

As for Lync, do you have a real need for it? If not then it ain't cost effective.

Yes , something like free project. An inhouse improvements in our System - we have deployed an Automatic Shutdown to save electricity bills. Similar to this project if you may share or any other improvements in System Administration - aside from scripting mentioned previously. Or, you may share any tool/freeware that are useful.

As requested, tell us more about your system as it is now and you may get some meaningful suggestions.

In a Microsoft shop, zero capital cost (but not time cost) enhancements could include:
                    SharePoint
DFS root + replication for file redundancy
Virtualisation (HyperV) depending on licenses, but freeing up old hardware

How about end user training in, for example, search (online and on the file system) to boost productivity. Also productivity tips for the Office Applications (for example using Outlook tasks effectively)

We have a DFS, Virtualization may incur a great costing, in SharePoint - what certain areas can we deploy fro improvement? Sorry i ask too much i am not so familiar with its functionalities.

                        Re: IT Cost Effective Projects

I suggest you do some more research into SharePoint and what it can and cannot do, then see if this fits your business requirements. As a starter, it can (in SharePoint 2010 Foundation):
Provide you with an "out of the box" intranet solution, either replacing an existing one or as a new one
Provide a basic document management solution (version control, checkin/out), replacing or enhancing shared folders
Provide a gateway to business data
Provide a platform for user collaboration, integrated with Exchange
Replace or enhance Exchange public folders
(Note this is not all it can do, just some starting points - you will need to do your own research and maybe set up a PoC)

Cost of virtualisation will depend on what you have already, which we do not know, but like all things in business, it is a trade off between the cost of maintaining and running multiple legacy servers and the cost of the virtualisation solution

                          Re: IT Cost Effective Projects

I am also thinking of managing .PST files accesible at one point from site to site especially for desktop users, better than mapping a shared folder. I am also considering implementing a roaming profile - what would be the pros and cons?

                            Re: IT Cost Effective Projects

PSTs over a LAN are a big no-no (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ps...BaPT0QX0sIDoDg) and really you should be using Exchange and getting rid of PSTs

Roaming profiles are a massive can of worms and, unless combined with folder redirection, will cause you lots of problems.

But you should be researching all this yourself and forming your own opinions

Appreciate your advise and patience for sharing. I am now looking on the energy conservation aspect like - monitor sleep or shutdown. Is there a way we can implement this via GPO without a 3rd party software? What would be the best free ware to be used in case?
