  • No drive letter for external USB drive.

I am running winXP pro and have just installed a 200gb hard drive in a disk caddy in a USB external housing. When I switch it on I get a 'safely remove' icon in the task bar and Device Manager lists the drive under 'Hard Drives' but it cannot be seen in windows explorer nor my regular file manager, Total Commander.
If I put the caddy containing the disk in the main tower box, XP sees it, calls it 'G' and it can be read from and written to. Why can't I use it on the USB link?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

If what Yuval suggested isn't the problem try opening disk management and make sure the drive isn't being assigned a drive letter that's already in use.

If it is changing the drive letter should resolve the issue.

Sounds to me like you haven't created a partition for the disk yet.

        Have you formatted the drive??

Did you create a partition for the drive??

What process did you follow to install the drive?? Did the drive have an existing file system on it??
