  • Awesome Freeware Windows Utilities

    Hi,

I thought I'd start a thread about freeware Windows utilities (don't care if they are open or closed source) as I have a few to suggest and I figured some of you guys might have some good ideas too:

RD Tabs (currently v2.1) from Avian Waves Software
RD Tabs is simply a tabbed RDP client but with additional features such as favourites management, standard customisations, connection thumbnails and other features that if I kept on about it people might think I represent the company. It works fine on XP (inc. VMWare VDI's), Vista and Windows 7 as well as Windows 2000 and 2003.

Virtual CloneDrive (currently r5.4.3.2) from SlySoft
I've tried a few virtual CD/DVD's and they all work but this one is the simplest and best IMO ... once you mount an ISO it behaves just like a real drive and works on any Windows OS I've tried (inc. Win 7 64bit). 'nuff said!

    CDBurnerXP
Once upon a time there was Nero and then it went wrong (burnt audio really bad) so I looked around and found CDBurnerXP but that didn't do Audio or burn/create ISO's so I found Burrrn which did Audio really well and ISO recorder which burned ISO's and ... but then CDBurnerXP went up to v4.x.x and it's just awesome! It does pretty much all the things I used to get from Nero (to be fair to Nero I think it does more now than then) including burning CDs & DVDs (and apparently Blu-Ray & HD-DVD but I wouldn't know much about that), the audio handling is superb, it can create bootable CD's, can convert NRG to ISO's, prints covers (no idea if it works with lightscribe drives) and works fine on XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 200 & 2003.

So ... anyone got any other decent utilities they'd like to recommend?

    Alex Feinman's ISO Recorder http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Rip CDs and DVDs to ISO and burn ISOs to CD on XP and Vista. Free for personal use. For commercial use with more than 5 seats, he charges €10 per seat for under 10 seats or € per seat for 10+ seats. For the licence fee you get 24/7 email support and he would consider minor product changes based on your feedback.

    Modelworks Software SitePad Pro http://www.modelworks.com/

Formerly commercial, now freeware, an excellent development environment for a huge number of languages. Fully extensible to support additional languages as required.

    nLite http://www.nliteos.com/

The easy way to create customised Windows XP CDs. Use vLite instead for Vista and 7.

    CutePDF http://www.cutepdf.com/

    Free no-frills Windows PDF writer.

This is a useful thread and will be stickied in due time, but please lets stick to FREEWARE utilities only or the spamming brigade will be out in force (and getting banned in force too )

Serious question here Tom. What do we do about apps like Primo PDF printer. http://www.primopdf.com/ They have a Freeware version but they also have a commercial version as well with both sitting on the same Home page.

This could get messy so we need to have some fairly easy to follow rules that perhaps set some reasonably rigid limits.

        2 2 was 1 2.

I think that should be OK -- what I want to avoid is the endless "password cracker" tools we get spammed with

            Buy my password cracker!!!!!

Getting back to utilities, there's always Sysinternals http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...s/default.aspx

And Optimum X have released some very useful tools too http://www.optimumx.com/download/

Angry IP Scanner is also worth a mention http://www.angryip.org/w/Home

            And of course, RoboCopy http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...8WS.10%29.aspx

            And KeePass http://keepass.info/

And that's me done for the time being

Edit: And PuTTY http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html and now I'm done

                Some interesting ones there guys

Another one I've just started using is TreePad Lite (yes there is a pro version but I've no idea what the difference is or how much it costs). I suppose the best way to describe it is as a sort of task list app ... it doesn't track progress or anything like that but it allows you to organise a series of tasks or projects. The advantage for me is, where I would before have had a text file with specific information in it in the folder I've created for a project, now I create a new "node" in TPL and then update the details in the right-hand pane. The RH pane appears to be only slightly more sophisticated than a text file but the beauty of it is that all my projects are held in a single place & an easily accessible form and I can quickly figure where I am on each project and update my manager when requested.

You might find it useful to have a look at OpenProj http://openproj.org/openproj

Kadonk's LiveProject is free for personal use http://www.kadonk.com/ (commercial use requires a 10 licence per machine)

And since I've mentioned it elsewhere on here within the last few days, I'll also chuck in a mention for HDClone from Miray Software. The free edition should be enough for 99% of end users http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#free

I'll also mention Dia ("freeware Visio") http://projects.gnome.org/dia/ and GIMP http://www.gimp.org/
