  • Change CTRL ALT DEL Screen

I have seen a few systems (Like Novell, RM Community Connect and some smartcard login software) is able to change the CTRL ALT DEL login screen (on XP and 2000) to include a different picture and layout. Does anyone know how this is done? I've searched google and nothing comes up.

    Cheers

Excellent stuff! It works but with a few modifications for XP USE. Here are my version of the instructions:

WARNING!! This CAN KILL YOUR PC! Not for beginners!

        Download http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ - Resource Hacker

Make a copy of msgina.dll from c:\windows\system32 and call it msgina2.dll

        Keep it in c:\windows\system32

Open resource hacker and open msgina2.dll. Go to Bitmaps then 101. Then to 1033 (depends on the language version of XP installed i think. 1033 is English). Go to the action menu and click Save Bitmap. Save it in c:\windows. You can now edit this version. DONT CHANGE THE SIZE! It will kill your PC.

Once you have changed the bitmap go back to resource hacker. Click the action menu and click replace bitmap. Choose your altered bitmap. The change should now be reflected in the resource hacker window.

Click save to alter the msgina2.dll. Now open regedit and add a string value to:

        HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\w inlogon

Call the string Ginadll and the value set toc:\windows\system32\msgina2.dll

Close regedit and reboot. This changes the "Loading Your Personal Settings" bitmap which is the same as the security dialogue box (change password screen, log off, task manager etc...). To change the CTRL ALT DEL screen in resource hacker go to 107 > 1033 instead of 101 > 1033 and repeat the process.

If it goes wrong: Make sure you can get to the C: drive of the PC you are changing from another networked PC and have admin rights. When you get the error message saying it cant load msgina2.dll wait until the hard drive light stops and then connect to the c: drive. Delete msgina2.dll and copy msgina.dll and rename it to msgina2.dll

Reboot and all should be well again... well it worked for me the first time it died. You can also install the recovery console before trying this and if it goes wrong overwrite the dll that way.

        Hope this helps someone out!
