  • Enable VPN to PING

    Hello,

I have my VPN running on 2003 windows server.
I cannot ping vpn.mydomain.com. I can ping the actually server name.
I read somewhere that it is better to ping the ip of the vpn. Is that true?

How do I get it to ping?

I tried going through ICS. According to it ICS and ICF cannot be enables because RARA[routing and remote access] has been enabled. In oorder to active ICS and ICF Disable RARA

So how do I get to ping vpn.mydomain.com without having to disable my RARA? And I want ping domain specific vpn.mydomain.com instead of pinging for the 2003 server name.

    Thanks
    Joe

Are you sure that the url is resolving correctly? When you ping a url the address is translated to the IP so its likely a DNS resolution issue.

Do you have vpn.yourdomain.com setup? If you ping it does it resolve the name to an ip address?

EDIT: Beat me to it Andrew!

yes: i have vpn.mydomain.com set up on another deep.mydomain.com server.
I can ping deep but cannot ping vpn.mydomain.com

is there something in RARA that i can enble to let the pings allow from both internal and external?

You have a VPN set on the RRAS (Routing and Remote Access)?
          Do you have firewall?
ICMP port must be open for ping replies.

              Additionally in the DNS
VPN.mydomain.com isnt listed in there however the deep.mydomain.com is in there.

                        enabled it in the firewall

now trying to ping from outside

                        and it works

//the firewall needed to be inabled for ping
                        ICMP ping port is 8
