  • reformating Dell Power Vault 725N with Other OS

    Hi All,

I have a very old NAS

Dell Power Vault 725N which I need to reformat due to system slowdown and the OS is Windows 2000 "powered" ?

"Because it uses Windows 2000 Server Appliance Kit, the 725N is a self-configuring Windows 2000 server that has been optimized for the server appliance role and requires no console."

    more info: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,692650,00.asp

I've download the mgmt software file from: http://ftp.us.dell.com/sysman/am360a05.exe but still have no clue on how to do the reformatting of this NAS.

the reason is that It refused to accept a file over 4 GB transfered using the LAN cable into it, therefore it is of no use to me if i can't reformat it.

and also I wonder if i can just install Windows 2003 Small Business Edition into it or OpenFiler to make it as iSCSI SAN solution.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Albert

I would speak to Dell tech/ support about it.. however, as a nas device, i woldn't be putting sbs on it.

the 4GB file size could be a filesyste limitation... ?

one of the first google results for "powervault 725n reinstall" is the following link:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=690483

so it look slike you probably CAN install other operatig systems on it.
i also found the following EE respinse. (scroll all the way to the bottom)
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/M..._21317934.html

so it probablyIS possible, but not supported, and not easy

can yo uformat just the data porttions of the nas? not being ale to load a 4gb file makes it sound like it's a fat32 FS..

well i think it was a known bug in Win2k kernel to refuse greater than 4 GB file transfer from the network, since the filesystem is NTFS.

thanks a lot for your suggestion.

If you can use an EXT3 format on the NAS device then you can get round the 4GB file size.

OK, using EXT 3 FS with OpenFiler, sounds like a last resort to me when the upgrade plan doesn't come up well.

We tried it, about the same one without a hardware raid controller.
Setting up a software raid on this box with ubuntu makes the machine deadslow.
It was really really horrible, setting up the raid tooks a few days.

I wouldn't do it. Is the current filesystem NTFS?

wow, thanks for your advice Dumber, so at this stage it seems that i shall just leave with the current OS to get a better performance, but I'm bit worried as this Windows 2000 Powered OS is no longer patched.

correct but that thing is I believe end of life so it should be replaced.
Anyhow if you want to play, go ahead. Whe installed ubuntu on it using bootp.
I've to add, since we installed ubuntu on it, we never touched that thing again
