Why can't you install Windows - what happens when you try?

Sounds like it could be one of those drives which doesn't have kernal mode drivers built into XP. Is it SATA/IDE/SCSI? Also, did it come with a driver disk? If so, install Windows on the drive and when prompted, press F6 and insert the driver disk.

Its IDE, no it didn't come with a driver CD, but surely if it was just that, it would at least load linux/windows?

            http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...loads/seatools

There is one for DOS to test your disk.

EDIT - you can also plug the disk into another machine to test it is ok.

Have you updated the bios for that motherboard?

I can't appear to get the ISO, and as I have no floppy, I'll have to test it in my other machine.
Thank you very much, I'll post back in about 15 minutes to say if it worked or not

Didn't go well, as I can't even boot my old computer, its that broke.
I'll try to find a BIOS update, but I don't think thats the answer, because it recognises it, but it just cant load any data.

Re: Hard Drive Boot Sector Death?

The BIOS update didn't help at all, is it just worth buying a new drive, or trying a wiping tool in Ulitmate Boot CD?

Re: Hard Drive Boot Sector Death?

Can you take it round to a friends to see if you can test it there.
My personal guess would either be hardware fault or motherboard issue. Most likely the disk. If it is in warranty you should be able to get a replacement however without testing it you may have a little trouble.
                    cheers

I fixed my other computer, and that appears to be reading the disk fine, I'm just waiting for windows setup to start now, although, it has taking a long time, but I'll feed back with the results when possible.
