  • execute chkdsk on bootup

    I'm having a problem with a few 2000 servers which blue screen intermittently when rebooting following a windows update installation.

    We can normally recover these servers by running the chkdsk utility.

    I checked on-line and found the following registry entry

    Local Machine\System\Current Control Set\Control\Session Manager
    Name = BootExecution
    Type = REG_MULTI_SZ
    Data = autocheck autocheck * DfsInit

    To schedule chkdsk to run on boot-up, the registry can be changed to
    Data =autocheck autochk /r \??\C:

    This seems to work, but only following the first reboot. For some reason after the first reboot the data is removed from the registry setting. Not even the default setting is in place.. it's simply blank.

    I've seen a few things on-line suggesting various 3rd party products i.e. adaware that could be to cause, but I don't have any of them installed.

    Does anyone have any ideas as this ones got me puzzled.
