  • How do I backup a server?

Some people say that we should be backing up the whole of the C-drive plus the user data on the server's drives. They say that if the server dies then you can install a basic server OS on new hardware, then restore the backed up C-drive onto the new hardware and the new server will be exactly like the old one upto the point of the last backup.

    Is this credible?

    Yep very credible.

I've done it before when a system has crashed and i've installed a base system and the backup software then restored directly over the top of it to get it running.

OK. So maybe this would work if the hardware is the same. What about if installing to new hardware? Say the mobo died and a new one was put it with a different make and/or model because the old one was no longer available.

Wouldn't this cause a major problem with drivers, etc if restoring the system files to the server's OS drive?

        Yes it would cause issues.

You never asked about dissimilar hardware though. I can't think of the product off hand but there are pieces of software that can do recovery to different hardware.

Actually i think one of them might have been LiveState from Symantec.

        *EDIT*

Done some digging and found this from MS

Here's a couple of links regarding backing up and restoring to dissimilar hardware:
