  • Xp wireless has good strength but doesn't connect?

My sis told me but....... that her wireless xp has be running slow and now doesn't connect to any web sites at all.

I check the connection icon in tray and it has good strength and cp pnl shows status connected BUT I can't get the IE6 browser to connect to any where, I installed Foxfire from my USB pen drive and it does the same thing.

She has AVG with auto up-dates, ad aware, spy bot search & destroy but these will not up-date due to the same issue.

I went back twice to 2 different restores and end up the same way.

I've run out of stuff to do.............HELP!! please.
    Later!!
    Jay

Run ipconfig/all and post the results here. Can you get DNS resolution to work? Is there an access policy on the WAP that is preventing internet connections?

How can I copy and post that...?

How ever, I did try this in the cmd :

      ipconfig /flushdns
      ipconfig /release
      ipconfig /renew

      and that didn't help.

Try updating the drivers of the wifi card.

I just fixed (fingers crossed) my issue where my wifi card would connect and get an IP but would periodically stop working.

What type of network card is it??

Re: Xp wireless has good strength but doesn't connect?

ipconfig can be pasted by turning on the marking feature of the cmd prompt.

you can also use it on a per-session basis by right-clicking on the title bar and moving down to the edit field. a side thing will pop out and you can select the one called "mark"

now just drag a box over the whole "ipconfig/all" and either hit the enter button or ctrl+c or right-click again on the title bar and select "copy" from the edit menu...

            then paste the results...

make note of the information contained therein, then try to ping the gateway. also verify that the IP address isnt a 169.xx.xx.xx number. if that is the case, then i would try to logon the router and make sure that DHCP is enabled.

if you cannot logon the router, then try assigning yourself an IP using the data provided via the ipconfig/all results.

are we using any aftermarket firewalls, like the Nvidia firewall? some are known to be strict and or problematic...

Install XP right over the top of the existing install, it's supposed to fix corrupt or missing files but leave program setting in tact.

Ok, I'll go and get the ping results.

                        Tried to ping these:

                        ping 192.168.1.2
                        ping 192.168.1.254
                        ping 4.2.2.2
                        ping yahoo.com

                        all timed out.

Why don't you just grab a copy of the latest drivers from the card manufacturer and uninstall the old ones and install the new ones.

I asked if you had done this 8 posts ago and you still haven't told me if you've done it.

I have just recently fixed and issue identical to this with a Netgear PCI WiFi card that was dropping packets and wouldn't connect to the internet by updating the drivers.

Hea, thanks but I did try that and forgot to post results...... no change.

Since this USB network device was installed by the Bellsouth tech... maybe 2 years ago, I wonder if I should call them ----- it may be bad.

I hate there service call $$$$$$$ bucks but choices are getting slim.

                              Good News !!
I gave up and called AT&T/Bellsouth DSL service, explained the issue and after going thru 2 different levels of techs... I finally got someone that sounded like he knew what I was explaining.
He had me bring up the properties of the wireless connection (that wasn't working) and told me to hit the disconnect button (of which I thought was odd but) --- after it got thru, he then ask me to bring it back up, select my wireless selection from the list and hit the "connect" button...... THIS brought up a window that I've never seen asking for my password, I entered same twice and "BANG" it's working.

Thanks to all that helped as I've learned some things that I never would have known other wise.
