  • Do I configure hardware RAID before OS install?

I'm new to the server support side of IT. I need to know if I configure the hardware RAID before I install Windows Server 2003. I have never configured a RAID before. I searched the net and get info on configuring the RAID, but no one specifies if it is done first. I also searched the forums and if this question is out there I'm just not finding it. I have found RAID threads and see that hardware RAID is better than software RAID, according to other members. Here is what I have to work with.

    Windows Server 2003
    DELL PowerEdge 2650
    2 x 18GB drives
    3 x 73GB drives

What I want to achieve is...

Mirror both 18GB drives for the OS (C:\)
RAID 5 on the three 73GB drives with two partitions (D:\ 25GB - E:\ remainder of space)

I don't know if this is too much info, but I just need to know who comes first, HW RAID configuration or the OS install. In advance, thanks for any information.

The answer is short, but Yes. Configure raid before going further.

It was probably a dumb question, but thank you.

You'll use the PERC utility to set up the RAID before the OS install (as mentioned). Depending on the RAID contoller you will press Ctrl +M or Ctrl +A during the POST to get into the PERC utility. You can call Dell support at 1-800-624-9896 to get assistance with doing this if the server has an active support contract.

You might consider reading these articles, before you start working on your server:
            - Using the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD
            - Dell PowerEdge 2650 Specifications

BTW, being new in a field means that you should use the two (it used to be only one, but we evolved since then) methods that never fail:
RTFM - Read The Friendly Manual
UTFSE - Use The Friendly Search Engine

Good luck and welcome to the servers' side....
