  • How to decide on the subnet mask

    Hi,

I read some reading materials on subnet mask and just couldn't really understand how to use it. Let say site A has 2000 users using 10.1.y.z. My questions are as below:

    1. Why opting subnet mask 255.255.0.0 give 254 networks with 65534 hosts each?

2.Isn't that default subnet mask for class A IP is 255.0.0.0?

    3. What is meant by choosing subnet mask of 255.255.0.0? Does it mean it can support 254 network from the third octet and 254*254 hosts? If just use 255.0.0.0, how many networks and hosts can be supported and what are the formulas to determine the number of networks and hosts?

Please assist if you have the knowledge in it.

    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    TKT

To understand TCP/IP subnetting issues I would recommend performing a Google search. I do have a very detailed article (over 80 pages long) but it's in Hebrew so I don't think it'll help you.

Look for CIDR and Subnetting, here is a sample search:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...idr+subnetting

You can also use the Online IP Subnet Calculator at:
