  • What does PING use?

OK, I already know that if I do

    PING station.work.gravy.peon.net

that PING is going to use DNS. It's obvious. However, what does it use if I type

    PING station

    ???

Let's assume that the network has DNS, WINS, and the workstation we're using has a HOSTS and LMHOSTS files. Both NBT and DNS caches are empty and IP is configured with WINS and DNS Servers.

What does PING do to resolve the name "station", and in what order?
