  • Change Drive names in Win XP Pro

Quick question - is there a way of changing drive names in XP Pro. Had a few problems with SP2 (involve several reinstalls and updates of USB drivers) and now have my two DVD drives listed as "Smart Media" & "Compact Flash" (must be from my card reader which is showing correct drive names).

System is P4 3.2 Ghz, 2Gb Crucial Ram, Gigabyte IPE8P1000 Pro m/b, Nvidia FX5900XT Graphics, 2 x IBM 250Gb SATA Drives, TDK Dvd RW, Sony DVD - all running on XP Pro SP2

I've tried re-booting with dvds disconnected then rebooting but to no avail.

    Would appreciate any suggestions

      Hi,

No, not the drive letters (it makes no odds where they are) but the drive name.

      C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M are all partitions on my hard disks,

I & J are my DVD drives but are listed in "my computer" as Smart Media & Compact Flash

N, P, Q, R are from my card reader and are Smart media, compact flash, secure disc and memory stick respectively

      S is a virtual drive.

I & J are showing the correct icon but the name is wrong, previously it showed TDK DVD *** and SONY DVD ***

You could try right clicking the drive in My Computer, select PROPERTIES
IIRC the display name is in the first tab
