  • Faster Copy for 400.000 files

    Hello Guys.

I have windows XP and about 400.000 files (text files 4K each) to copy to another hard drive.
This will take some hours i think.
I there a faster way, (via 3rd party software lets say) or some method to copy them faster?

    Regards.

Have you thought of using NTBACKUP (or even WINZIP) to back them up to a single file, copying the single file, and then restoring the backup on the new drive? It's only roughly 1.6Gb so I would not expect it to take more than a couple of hours total on a normal server system - maybe on a workstation style box it would take longer...

(As an example I copied 22Gb using robocopy from a USB2 external hard disk to an internal SCSI RAID5 array of 4 disks on an IBM xSeries 345 and it took 8.5 hours)

        Hello Tech25,

What about you zip them, and send transfer them as one zipped file?

There are third party software like "Folder Match", there is also a free microsoft toy "Synctoy", that will let you do that also.

        Best regards,

Sorry I hadn't checked the times

That's a fairly friendly answer compared to the one I would have given!

                Thanks

I think winzip has a file amount limit i think. Right?

Re: Faster Copy for 400.000 files

                      This is more just informational.
Doing the zip method is a good idea because text files compress so much. You can usually get about 90% compression out of them.
                      i.e. 1.52GB compresses to 156MB .... roughly.
                      Regards,

You are right in that. Text files compress too much
