  • How do I find things [was: i've got a weird question!]

    hi everybody.
assuming that most of the people here are mcps or at least have some experience in IT i want to ask a couple of questions.
    examples:
sometimes you need a software that even you have no idea what to call it or better to say search for (and you want the best). like you just need a software to
convert a html page to jpeg.
or sometimes you need some info that searching forit is time consuming or
difficult. like you need a software that indexes your pdfs and chms and allows people to search for them on network.
    i want to know:
where do you usually start? is it a search engine , a forum ....?
and what are your usual sources? if you like mention please.
and imagine you don't have any friends and internet is the only way.
    thank you very much.

Re: i've got a weird question!

Well first I search my memory to see if I can recall anything

Um is where I usually go to find answers and then, if didn't find what I was looking, I would post on the forum (making sure I include all I've found out and what I've done).

Google or one of the specialist sites like here (obviously) or experts exchange

Put in broad keywords and narrow down. Eventually you hit what you want.

Also, lots of well managed bookmarks!

        hi
i'm really excited because this is the first time someone answers this question.believe me!
i had asked this question several times in other (well-known) forums and there was only insult. i guess they really don't know the answer.
        thanks for the information.

Now thats the difference between Petri and some other sites!

The only thing I would add is to try to do as much research as you can before posting messages on a forum like this, and tell us what you have done already. That saves the game of "20 questions" trying to move past the "I've got a problem" stage.

just a few things in mind:

            1) start digging you're memory
            2) start and search google (www.google.com)
            3) note down what you already tried.
            4) come back and create a new thread. Use also you're notes and what you already have tried. Also write everything down how you're enviroment looks like. We doesn't have the all seeing eye.
            5) if you find the solution, come back, post it and if someone provided a solution, say thank you :P

                hi
                thanks for the activity!
well actually i'm not that much lame.i've never failed in finding what i want on internet! but the main problem is time.i just started this in order to:
1)find if people here are eager to find new ways(as i am)
2)find if you're interested in making a new thread dedicated to these stuff, something more than misc. part, because this site is great and i think its getting more popular.
but before all of these how about making a tutorial where people here can improve it? if it's accepted, i'll start making one and i'll put it here for you to have a look at it. please tell me your oppinion.
                thanks again.
