  • Bootable Problem

    Hi,

I have Dell OptiPlex 990 Corei3 2 GB RAM with 2.50 GB SATA HDD, and it has no optical drive. When i boot my PC from win98 CD through External optical drive, it gives an error with prompt.

The error displays "Device driver not found oemcd001"

    WHICH version of Windows???
The twentieth century called - they want their OS back

Sounds as if the server needs drivers to read from the optical drive, but no idea how you would inject them into the install

How about a (free) Hypervisor and a virtual machine?

Yes, I spotted that the first time.
I am slightly surprised that you are even considering using a 14 year old OS

Some of the links here may help, but this assumes that appropriate drivers are actually available:

Your CD doesn't have the relevant CD drivers.

I am successful to boot my PC from USB Bootable but not from my external optical drive with several win98 CD's. Why?

Because it doesn't have the correct drivers.

Where and how to find correct driver? Should i burn these drivers into my bootable CD?

                  Re: Bootable Problem

                  Are you being serious???

First thing i need to ask. Is the CD bootable and has been tested as working on another drive??

Have you installed the relevant USB drivers as well?? From memory Win 98 was a bit flaky with USB.

In your situation i would download a Win 98 boot disk (search the internet) with generic CD drivers and USB drivers. I have just done a quick google and found plenty of information in the first page that would get me going.

Why on earth are you even working with a Win 98 Installation??

                    Re: Bootable Problem

With 98 couldn't you boot from floppy that had the CD drivers then run setup from the CD?
                    cheers

                      Re: Bootable Problem

Yes if you had the correct boot disk, 98SE i think.

The problem is that he/she is booting from an external USB CD so i would imagine that they would need the relevant drivers loaded for that as well.

                        Re: Bootable Problem

Yeah agreed, just wondered if the workaround would be to boot from floppy?
                        cheers

                          Re: Bootable Problem

Even still it would require the USB drivers to run to be able to see the USB CD.

Its been way too long since i've had to think about Win 98 LOL

I just feel sorry for the poor person............

Wouldn't copying the entire Windows 98 CD to a USB Mem Stick and booting from that negate the need for the CD drivers?

                            That's my 2p worth.......

Possibly but i don't think that Win 98 will install from a USB key, getting XP to do it was hard enough lol.
