  • Dual Processor - Best Memory Configuration

    Hi all,

I have a HP DL380 G7 with dual processors to used as a SQL 2005 server running Windows 2008 standard.

    I have 3 x 2GB memory modules and 3 x 8Gb.

What would be the best way to lay out the memory? Is it ok to put the 3 x 2Gb on one 'side' and the 3 x 8Gb on the other. Will the processors 'share' the memory or do I ideally want to balance the memory up on both 'sides'?

    Cheers

    Jim

Would I just be better scrapping the 3 x 2GB (they came with the box) and adding one more 8GB module and putting 16GB on each processor. I believe ideally they should be in 3's but 2 on each side should be ok I assume?

      RAM should be paired, always

so yea, get rid of at LEAST 1 2GB, and then buy another 8GB.

Then, install your memory in banks, with the highest contiguous space first:

so if you have two banks, put an 8GB in slot0 for each bank.
then do the same for slot1 for each bank
      then do the 2GB chip.

      always pair though..

Re: Dual Processor - Best Memory Configuration

Cheers that makes sense. I have paired up the 2 x 8GB on either bank and the 2 x 2Gb for now and will order another 8GB and remove the 2 x 2GB (as the max mem is only 32GB) soon.

        Thanks

        James

The latest intel processors need 3 memory modules per processor for optimal performance.

Re: Dual Processor - Best Memory Configuration

                I thought 3 were better.

As I have a max of 32GB with the OS and have 2 processors, if I purchased 4 x 4GB would this layout be ok

                PROC 1 PROC2
                A B C C B A
                8 4 4 4 4 8

Just put it in the server, and then run the "Intel memory configuration checker"

Correct, that's a triple channel setup.
