A lot comes down to additional factors:
What do you use your laptop for (e.g. games will require better graphics / larger screen)
    Is size / weight important?
    Is storage space important?
    Do you have a budget?
    etc.... etc....

      Re: i5-520M vs i5-430M

      Thanks for your reply

      1. I don't use laptop for games. Graphics is important but not very important
      2. Size more then weight is important. Both model are 15.4"
      3. Storage Space is important
      4. Two models have (more or less) the same price (about 700 Euro)

Above all I'm interested in performance
Also temperature and noise are important

I know that the answer depends on the use, but generallly is better processor frequency or speed hd?

        Re: i5-520M vs i5-430M

A higher spec'd processor will yield better/improved performance than a faster hard drive.

You did not answer the question - can you tell us what you intend to use the laptop for - what type of applications will you be installing, what size files will be read from the drive etc

          basically

          Office (OpenOffice really)
          VisualStudio 2005
          Autocad Mechanical 2010
          Inventor 2010 (maybe)

Have both devices have the same amount of RAM? AutoCAD likes CPU and RAM.

              Yes, 4Gb each one.

the only differences are the Processor and the hd (speed)

CAD/design applications also perform better with good graphics cards. Get a 512MB card.

                    Re: i5-520M vs i5-430M

Amendment to the above -- dedicated graphics memory, not shared RAM
Also look at a 64-bit OS and be sure the BIOS lets you make full use of the 4Gb

IMHO, look outside just Dell laptops -- often "cheaper" brands like Acer give you a good "bang/buck" ratio

Each model has a ATI Radeon with 1Gb RAM and Windows 7 64bit as SO

Are you sure that Acer is cheaper then Dell? In my experience is not always true

Anyway my doubt is about processor frequency and hd speed )

Surprisingly HDD speed makes stuff all difference. I purchased a 500GB 7,200rpm HDD for my laptop to replace the 5,400rpm on and notice ZERO performance difference. This is despite there is a 35% performance boost with the faster drive. Guess the chipset/controller wasn't up to it.

On past experiences I would go for the Dell. I have found them to be surprisingly fast machines. Acer however does have a longer warranty in my part of the world.

We've been using Dell workstations, servers and laptops for 10 years. They are rock solid. Also, their support is superb.
