  • dell Md3000 - shared volume ?

REally quick response on this one if possible.. we can't find the answers and our specialist is out of the office (our entire partner team is it seems)

We're looking at building two Hyper-V servers, with a shared backend. Basic idea is active/passive - one server fails, the other one can see the same storage, and can keep running (or at least restart) the virtual machines, with minimal intervention.

Based on what we;'re seeing and understanding - the MD3000 will not let us do this. If the ultimate solution has to be the md3000i or another iSCSI or FC route, then it has to be.. but we're being told to go this way by the boss.

anyone got one of these that can definitively tell me we can do this ?

We have one but we don't use it that way. We have two hosts, each with one dual port HBA with a single connection to one of the two RAID controller modules on the MD3000 (host 1 connects to RAID controller module 0 and host 2 connects to RAID controller module 1). Having said that, I think it will do what you need if I'm understanding what you're asking: connecting two hosts to one of the RAID controller modules for a redundant data path to the virtual disks on that module, right? Have a look here at the Hardware Owner's Manual and the Owner's Guide:

the 'small' scenario is almost exactly what we're planning.. except probably R410s for servers
