  • Slow copy to NAS

I have an issue when copying large information to my NAS disk. The NAS disk has a 1gb interface and is plugged in to a 1gb switch, the PC i am using to copy also has a 1gb network card.

For example copying 170gb to this NAS disk can take 6-7hours. When I compare this copying the same amount to a external USB disk it takes around 40mins.

As far as I am aware USB2 speed is around 500mbps so why is the NAS disk so much slower..... It is all new hardware (6 months or younger)

Does anyone have an idea of how i can speed this up ?

    thanks

    Re: Slow copy to NAS

What Raid is it running? That will add to the copy speed. Also, what is the 'duplex' on the network connection? When copying the data, is the NAS box in use by others?

Hi Virtual, thanks for the reply.

The nas disk is a western digital 1tb (2x500gb) and it is configured as 1 volume.

I will need to check the duplex settings, what setting would increase the speed?

Nobody else is accessing the disk.

      thanks

Is the anti virus running a network scan?

Hi Biggles, no scans are active. I have AVG on the machine and is is setup with manual scans.

          thanks

            Re: Slow copy to NAS

How are you copying the files accross?
I remember someone had a similar problem not long ago with Xcopy.
They were using the /v and /r parameters and once he removed them, the network utilization suddenly increased.
