  • 2 x isp need to connect to local printer

not sure if this is the correct forum, and even whether i have an acceptable post title...

anyway, essentially have 6 machines, 3 connected to one isp, and 3 connected to another, via their onboard nic.

thing is, it is a requirement that they all print to the same printer.

currently, each pc has a separate usb-nic adapter, which connects via a mini-hub to the printer*

unfortunately, print jobs do not print, and, bizarrely enough, network connectivity does not work on some of the machines while the usb-nic adapter is connected.

question is - is there an easy way to provide the requirements without purchase of more hardware?
are these usb-nic adapters known to be faulty?

is there a way to 'force' print jobs to not travel via the isp connection.

*this was set up last year, by someone else (!)

    any thoughts most appreciated.

    thanks.

Could you give more information on the setup or provide a diagram?

What I'm guessing is you have two routers and the two groups of computers are connected to the respective routers with their onboard NICs.

What might be possible, if you have open ports available on both routers, would be to connect the two routers together and setup routes to each of the subnets.

Let us know your setup and what model routers you have and maybe we can advise on a solution.

and if that doesn't work, you might be able to create site-to-site vpns between the two connections ?

        (couldn't do the direct link)

alas, physically connecting the two routers together not really an option, as they are in different cabinets (the pcs are connected to them through the onboard nics via wall jacks), however the 'usb-nic' adapters enable connection to the printer in the same room.

They are SMC devices (will find out the exact model numbers), and the usb-nic adapters are some obscure made in china brandless make.

Thing is, these usb-nic adapters appear to cause conflicts, in that a machine connected to an isp is working fine until one of the usb-nic adapters is connected, then it fails to connect. Removing the usb-nic adapter seems to re-enable the connection.

unable to print items from the internet to the printer connected via the usb-nic adapters, which is the main reason for this particular setup.

apologies if not described it too well (!), but i think you may have the idea.

        thanks for any thoughts.

Re: 2 x isp need to connect to local printer

Ideally you would want to connect the two routers together but if that is not possible then a VPN like tehcamel mentions would be an option (though this would be horribly inefficient).

Another thing to check with the USB adapters is to make sure the interface is not configured with a gateway. So plug in a USB adapter, go to the TCP/IP properties and remove the gateway IP address if one is there.

If there is one configured there then that is probably the cause of your issues with losing connection to the Internet.

is there any way you can run a physical cable from SwitchA on the left to SwitchC at the bottom, and SwitchB on the right to SwitchC at the bottom?

sorry for late reply, yep - gateway removed, and appears to work fine now.
able to connect to both isps, and print locally.
              thanks for your assistance!
