  • Performing an audit / sending break message to various client types

Shalom Mr Petri and other forum members.

Could you please assist me with my problem?

I work in the IT department for a NZ charity.
My boss has tasked me with performing a network audit of all our sites - not easy!

He wants me to find out the location of each device. I have to match this information to the machine name and mac on a list I have generated.

One idea I had was to send break messages to the clients and ask the user to email me in batch script or c program. The email client is in the cloud and not locally.

    Our environment details:
Our server's are outsourced using citrix middleware and we have a lot of
    different clients including:

Desktops running Windows XP SP 2/3
Thinconnect thinclients including HP T5135/'45 and Wyse ThinClient
HP Mini netbooks running Windows 7

A pleathora of Ricoh laser printers...

We have 3 implied Workgroup networks.

I am looking for a smarter way to audit this equipment and am looking for ideas.

I have looked everywhere for a solution without success.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Do you have managed switches???

Have you installed a port scanner and scanned the netowrk???

Any of these should give you the information you require.
