Can anyone tell me why my Internet Explorer 8 fails to show any toolbars at the top sometimes when first opened? Instead the boxes are all shown in black and I have to reboot to get them to show normally.

I use Windows XP and Avast antivirus.

Have you tried minimising and maximising?
What graphics card are you using?

Thanks Ossian. I will try MIN / MAXIMISING next time it happens.

Thanks but funny thing the fault has not ocurred since Avast installed a new version of their software, also like their Shield used to fail to initiate especially if I have been using WS_FTP to upload the previous time the PC was used.

But I will do a screen dump if it happens again.

I have recently delt with a loosely similar prob, i resolved it by unchecking lock the toolbar

I managed to get the error of blacked out toolbars to show again as below first thing morning, after I used Outlook Express to open up Internet Explorer from a link in an email. But my reliable Avast antivirus displays no warnings

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers?
Is it a desktop or a laptop, and is it a separate graphics card or onboard?

                  Re: Internet Explorer 8

Thanks as I posted earlier here the system info is at

                  http://www.sigord.co.uk/TEMP/System.jpg

                  http://www.sigord.co.uk/TEMP/System3.jpg

I never get involved in tinkering about with the inside of a PC apart from perhaps replacing a Drive or CD / DVD. Besides this occasional problem only started when I updated Avast. I shall just have to make sure to activate IE once before on it s own before I collect my emails.

I jus thought someone might know of a bug in IE. Locking, or unlocking the toolbars has no effect once they go black.

                    Re: Internet Explorer 8

System info really didnt help answer either question -- I'm sure you can tell if it is a laptop or a desktop without "tinkering"

The reason I ask is that some on-board graphics cards, particularly on laptops, can cause display problems with certain apps, and your black patches is, to me, a classic symptom

Sorry this is a Desktop I have had for over 2 years, and only seen the problem recently.
