  • Map Network Drive over SSH

    Hi all,

I need to map a network drive from a remote site to the central site. I need the remote site to be able to share a drive locally and have a mapped remote network drive. Unfortunately, I can not use VPN to accomplish this at all locations, some use satellite and cannot get pptp or ipsec to connect.

I have a SSHd service running on a windows server and I am using putty to tunnel port 445 traffic over port 22.

I have read procedures where you can do this without uninstalling "File and Printer Sharing" from the network interface properties, unfortunately I can't seem to get that to work.

I have tried both forwarding localhost ports and by using a loopback adapter (with File and Printer Sharing disabled) but can only get it to work when I have uninstalled the File and Printer Sharing service. (Testing from a Vista workstation to a Windows 2003 server)

Can this be done or is there another(better) way?

    Thanks in advance,
    Major

AFAIK you can't share a folder w/o having File and Printer sharing enabled.
I tested this with a PPTP tunnel and on the remote side if I uncheck "File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" I can no longer bring up the drive I have mapped.

I'm not sure what to suggest since you have connectivity issues.

      Exactly, that's my problem.

I tried to use a loopback adapter and just have the File and Printer Sharing service disabled for that adapter and not the regular Network interface. I saw several procedures that had this as the preferred method.

Unfortunately I cannot get this to work. I think it may be an update issue with Vista SP 2 and XP SP 3, I am researching this right now.

I don't really have connectivity issues per se, as VPN's seem to be a known issue with Satellite providers. SSH appears to work fine, its just that I am not able to forward the network share without uninstalling the File and Printer Sharing service.

I actually think I may have solved my issue using this page here:

I am running some more tests but so far it looks promising.
