  • Two SBS 2003 share one app server

We have a company with one sbs 2003 server. The company is going to split into two seperate companies although still in the same physical building. One company (A) will continue to use the existing sbs (server A). The new company (B) will get its own sbs server (server B). The two will share a single Internet circuit but will be separated by a router and each have its own switch and IP addressing for itself and its workstations. The issue is how to have each server (A and B) and their workstations access a single application server (C) but not each other? Where would the app server (C) need to be? Is it a member of one of the domains and somehow the other domain can access it? Or is it in its own domain and both servers are able to access it? Any ideas on a way to accomplish this? Thanks

How about having the app server as a non-domain server and rely on passing local usernames and passwords to it

    What is the application?

you could try creating a separate domain all together.. :P
      probably an over-engineered solution though

SBS doesnt do trusts, so a separate domain wont help

Re: Two SBS 2003 share one app server

You could use a third domain for the application server (Domain C - no trust between A, B, or C). Then create user accounts in the C domain for all A and B users. When they need to run the application they use the username and password that you set up in the C domain. So essentially they have two user accounts: One user account in domain A or domain B for accessing that domain and it's resources and a second user account in domain C for accessing the application.

You could do this with only the A and B domains by creating a user account in domain A or B for the other domains' users for the purpose of running the application but then you'll have to worry about making sure that the users from the other domain can run the application only and don't have access to anything else, which would get pretty complicated to set up.

Think of domain C as a "secured" domain that is available to domains A and B for running the application while still maintaining the separation between domains A and B.
