  • SMTP relay Server and Mail Security?

    Hi,

We have implimented relay server at our office....the operating system is Windows XP pro.
    relay is working fine...
Problem is that, we want a software which should block the mail attachments which do not suppose to go out.

For example...if a user rename the extension Word document file document.doc to Document.xls should not go outside.

So we want a software which should work to perform this kind of task.

Pls any one help to get this software.

    Regards

I'm sorry, you will need to explain a lot more
    Do you want to:
    a) Block all attachments?
    or
    b) Block attachments of a specific type e.g. doc files
    or
    c) Block attachments based on their content rather than on the file extension (e.g. doc files renamed as xls files)

    Are you already using Exchange?

Re: SMTP relay Server and Mail Security?

We just want to allow Doc and excel file but problems are as follows.

      1) when user rename the document or excel file to any other extention type should not go outside.

      2) Other problem is that we are using Mozilla Thunderbird and Outlook Express, So we don't want that the user can export the address book and send out side the office, even though they rename the extension to any other extension shuld be blocked.

If you look at the scanario we are using is we are using send mail (Linux mail server) and we implement relay on XP machine, so the filtering will be on this relay server.

Hope the problem is now clear to you. Please give me some sort of solution soon.

      Thanks....

Re: SMTP relay Server and Mail Security?

Scanmail is based on extension nothing more unfortunately.
The basic answer is you can't , people can always screenshot and send info as jpg for example.

The basic answer is you can't guarantee to stop this stuff going out. You should setup journalling and have a good set of employee legal requirements so, should it happen, you can prosecute.
