  • Software vs. hardware router

Greetings and thanks for any input.

I have a small LAN connected up to the Internet using a Linksys WRT54G. I've been searching for a while with no answer. My question is whether or not setting up my Windows 2003 for RRAS would be faster than my Linksys WRT54G. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

IMO, a hardware dedicated router I would expect to be faster than a software based router, though I am not familiar with the Linksys routers and for a small LAN, I would have thought you would be ok with RRAS.

For any reasonable SOHO setup, your Internet connection would be the bottleneck way before router starts to have too much effect on performance. For serious bandwidth and VPN usage a 50 SOHO device isn't good enough, as this test proves, but the article is quite old.
